hrm...

this idea that something needs to be a "conciousness elevator" to be "art" is a little troublesome.

giving art critics this authority to be so diffinative (art or not) is a little sticky too, eh?

I agree with him and almost all his points... Everyone wants to be an artist -- he points out the best thing in it. "Yeah lets saw everything thing is art, ok... most of it sucks"

he does make some good points, i think. but it is a little disconcerting to me, i guess, to think about someone out there having the authority to deem one thing art and another not art with the swish of his hand. and that means to me, too, that it is hard for me to think that there are people out there who are making with these kinds of people in mind (the critics).

We'll you have all different types of critics, these are people that make things happen and promote art as it is. They are no different then people reviewing movies or restaurants. The thing is most people can't think for them selves so the trust people whom have ideas, understanding (historical and culture) and taste to guide them... Art is also don't forget about making money or investment. People buying jell-o art someone needs to be pointing out that it is gimmickie and they might as well just wiped there ass with 100 dollar bills for a month instead.

What's the difference between a gimmick and choice of materials/technique?

If it is simply a novelty and repeated like oh! that is neat and when someone is a "one-trick pony" ie only doing the sample thing over and over. i.e. Jell-o sculptors and not trying to redefine or explore the work. It is exploitation to a degree as well of the work.

gimmick n.
1. A device employed to cheat, deceive, or trick, especially a mechanism for the secret and dishonest control of gambling apparatus.

2. 1. An innovative stratagem or scheme employed especially to promote a project: an advertising gimmick.

---

technique n. 1. The way in which the fundamentals, as of an artistic work, are handled.

Art has nothing to do with money.
